❄️ South Island Snow & Springs: A Family RV Adventure from Christchurch

Our 20-day road trip across New Zealand’s South Island was a breathtaking adventure full of alpine views, hot pools, glacier trails, and the kind of family memories that stick like snowflakes on wool mittens. We began our journey in Christchurch, and thanks to thoughtful road trip planning and a great camper route planner, we were ready to explore some of the most thrilling ski areas and natural wonders the South Island has to offer.

Starting off in a cozy campervan picked up in Christchurch, we kicked things off with a visit to the International Antarctic Centre, a fantastic way for the kids to learn about polar exploration—and to feel like we were already in the snowy peaks. It was the perfect way to ease into the chillier side of New Zealand.

We followed the road trip planner southwest to Rakaia Gorge Walkway, a short hike offering river views that could easily be mistaken for a painting. Not far away, the Opuke Thermal Pools & Spa in Methven gave us a preview of the geothermal relaxation ahead. These solar-powered thermal pools were a family favorite—especially on crisp winter afternoons.

Then came the real snow: Mt Hutt Ski Area, our first taste of alpine fun. Whether you’re skiing or snowboarding—or just enjoying a warm drink with a view—Mt Hutt is a must for anyone planning a motorhome trip through New Zealand’s ski country.

We made a delicious pit stop at the legendary Fairlie Bakehouse (their pies are a rite of passage), then rode horses through snow-dusted valleys with Mackenzie Alpine Horses near Lake Tekapo. A soak at Tekapo Springs, with snowflakes falling into the steaming pools, reminded us of the perks of winter road travel.

The Hooker Valley Track was surprisingly accessible even for our little hikers, and the views of Aoraki/Mount Cook were unforgettable. We paused for photos (and snowball fights) at Lindis Pass, then continued to the Goldfields Mining Centre for a dash of historic charm.

Near Queenstown, Gibbston Valley Cheesery & Deli offered a cheese-and-wine moment for the grown-ups before we hit the slopes again at The Remarkables Ski Area. We balanced our snowplay with animal encounters at Kiwi Park Queenstown, and the kids loved riding the Skyline Queenstown gondola for panoramic views.

Our route planner suggested a detour to Te Anau Glowworm Caves, and we’re glad it did—gliding through dark caverns lit by glowworms was one of the most magical experiences of the trip. Then came Doubtful Sound, explored by kayak on a calm, misty morning—completely surreal.

Heading back north, we took a powder day at Treble Cone Ski Area before hiking the Roys Peak Track. The views from the summit made every step worth it (and yes, we brought snacks).

On the West Coast, Thunder Creek Falls and our Fox Glacier tour showed us the raw power of nature. The kids were fascinated by the glacial landscape—something you can’t truly appreciate until you walk on it.

We explored Pancake Rocks and Blowholes and ventured into the Punakaiki Cavern—a little spooky, very cool. As we wound inland, Maruia Hot Springs offered another much-welcome soak, and we closed the loop with some thrills at Hanmer Springs Adventure Centre.

One of our favorite cultural stops was the He Tangata Māori experience—a genuine and warm introduction to local traditions and stories. And before returning our RV in Christchurch, we squeezed in some shopping at Dress-Smart Hornby and circled back once more to the International Antarctic Centre, where it all began.

🗺️ Road Trip Planning Tips:

  • How to plan a motorhome trip in New Zealand? Start by deciding your season (winter for skiing!), then use a detailed New Zealand camper route planner to find RV-friendly roads, campsites, and attractions.

  • Book ski passes and guided tours in advance, especially for places like Fox Glacier, Doubtful Sound, and Mt Hutt.

  • Bring layers! Even in a well-heated motorhome, South Island nights get chilly.

  • Download offline maps and check campervan parks near ski areas—many offer shuttle service to the slopes.

This round journey from Christchurch blended snow, springs, culture, and coastlines—all made possible by the freedom of traveling in a motorhome. For anyone wondering how to plan a motorhome trip in New Zealand, we can’t recommend the South Island enough. The flexibility of an RV, paired with the wonder of these natural and cultural stops, made it a trip of a lifetime.
