Rockies & Rustlers: A Family RV Adventure from Edmonton to Yellowstone and Back

Planning a motorhome trip across Canada and the USA is the kind of family adventure that creates stories for a lifetime. With our route planner dialed in, we set out on a 26-day round road trip from Edmonton, with our campervan packed and ready. Our journey would take us through the Canadian Rockies, into the legendary parks of Montana and Wyoming, and back through some of the most scenic corners of Alberta.

We kicked things off in Edmonton with a little urban fun at West Edmonton Mall, always a kid favorite with its indoor amusement park and water slides. From there, we rolled into Red Deer for a quick stop at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame—a great way to get inspired by Canadian athletes while stretching our legs.

In Calgary, we immersed ourselves in music at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, and soaked up the lively energy of the Calgary Stampede. Whether you’re into rodeos, fair food, or live music, it’s a festive must-see during July. Don’t skip Heritage Park Historical Village for a hands-on look at life in the early West—great for kids and history-loving parents.

Crossing into Montana, our 4-wheeled home-on-wheels became our ticket to freedom. The Saint Mary Visitor Center was our gateway to Glacier National Park, where even the drive along Going-to-the-Sun Road felt cinematic. The Montana Dinosaur Center was a fun stop for the kids—who knew you could see real fossils in the wild?

In Cody, Wyoming, we ate like cowboys at The Celtic Cowboy Pub and Restaurant and took in the expansive exhibits at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. But the highlight of our Yellowstone leg was the Old West Dinner Cookout near Roosevelt Lodge—complete with horses, campfire stories, and cowboy coffee. Yellowstone itself delivered awe-inspiring views at Old Faithful, wildlife sightings, and educational fun at the Visitor and Education Center.

On the way back north, we visited the fascinating Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, then detoured to explore Lewis and Clark Caverns—a cool underground adventure. Montana’s ghostly past came to life in Garnet Ghost Town, and we paused for lake views at Kerr Dam Overlook Trail, right by Flathead Lake.

Re-entering Alberta, the Rockies greeted us again with open arms. We hiked the Lake Agnes Trail, rode the Banff Gondola, and marveled at the glacier views near Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre. The scenic drive along Alberta Highway 93 was a perfect reminder of how majestic this part of the world is, especially from the comfort of an RV.

The Jasper SkyTram offered an elevated perspective (literally), and the Galloway Station Museum in Edson was a final cultural touchpoint before we rolled back into Edmonton—dusty, delighted, and full of stories.
