Setting off on a 25-day motorhome adventure from Melbourne to Cairns along Australia's picturesque East Coast was the ultimate family journey, filled with diverse landscapes, rich history, and unforgettable experiences.
Our trip began in Melbourne, where we packed up our RV and embarked on our northward journey. Our first stop was Old Gippstown - Gippsland's Heritage Park, where the kids delighted in exploring the charming collection of historic buildings and learning about life in Australia over a century ago. The immersive experience of living history made for an engaging start to our trip.
Venturing further east, we found ourselves amidst the lush greenery of Tarra-Bulga National Park. The kids enjoyed walking along the suspension bridge and spotting native birds and wildlife in the tranquil rainforest setting. It was the perfect opportunity to stretch our legs and breathe in the fresh, eucalyptus-scented air.
A highlight of our journey was the Kosciuszko Walk from Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak. The breathtaking views along the Alpine Way were worth the effort, and reaching the summit was a rewarding experience for the whole family. We made sure to plan ahead with appropriate clothing and snacks for this adventure.
As we continued our journey north, we stopped at Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra. The interactive exhibits kept the kids entertained for hours while they learned about science and technology through hands-on experiences. It was an educational pit stop that added variety to our road trip.
Sydney welcomed us with open arms, and the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium was a must-see. The kids were captivated by the marine life, particularly the sharks and colorful tropical fish. We took advantage of the opportunity to teach them about the importance of marine conservation.
Heading further north, the Newcastle Museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the city's industrial and maritime history, with exhibits that engaged visitors of all ages. The kids loved the interactive displays, making learning fun and engaging.
In Coffs Harbour, the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden provided a serene escape. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens, appreciating the diverse plant species and stunning views.
A stop at the Stone & Wood Brewery in Byron Bay was a treat for the adults. The kids were entertained with games and activities while we savored a taste of the region's renowned craft beers.
No trip along the East Coast would be complete without a visit to Australia Zoo. The animal shows and encounters thrilled the kids, offering a deeper understanding of Australia's unique wildlife.
As we continued our journey through Queensland, the Paperbark Forest Boardwalk and Capricorn Caves provided opportunities for exploration and adventure. The kids were fascinated by the natural wonders and enjoyed learning about the geology and ecology of the region.
Townsville Barra Fun Park offered a fun-filled day of water activities, while The Pocket Fresh Produce Market and Takeaway Coffee in Townsville ensured we were well-stocked with fresh, local produce for our journey.
Approaching Cairns, we set sail with Great Adventures on a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef and Green Island. Snorkeling among the vibrant coral and marine life was an experience that left us all in awe, cementing our appreciation for this natural wonder.
Finally, our journey concluded with a ride on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, offering panoramic views of the lush rainforest canopy as we descended into Cairns. It was the perfect way to end our epic road trip, reflecting on the incredible landscapes and experiences we had shared.
Our RV route planner was invaluable in organizing this extensive journey, allowing us to plan stops, accommodations, and activities to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
