Exploring Finland and Sweden in a Motorhome: An 18-Day Scandinavian Adventure
When we set out on our 18-day road trip through Finland and Sweden, we knew it would be a journey unlike any other. With our rented motorhome, we were free to explore the vast and varied landscapes, from the icy northern wilderness to the bohemian coastline of Sweden. This family-friendly adventure was a perfect mix of culture, nature, and exciting activities that kept everyone engaged. Here’s a glimpse of our unforgettable experience.
The Arctic Heart of Finland
We kicked off our journey in Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus. Our first stop was the Arktikum, where we immersed ourselves in the fascinating history and science of the Arctic. We then headed to Sukulanrakka and the Giant’s Kettle, natural wonders that gave us an insight into Finland’s stunning geological past.
As we continued through the vast Lapland, we made our way to Teknikens Hus in Luleå, a hands-on science museum that entertained both the kids and adults. From there, we ventured into the enchanting wilderness of Friluftsmuseet Hägnan and found peace in the serene surroundings of the Jävre Lighthouse.
Nature and Adventure
Finland’s landscape is a playground for adventure, and we embraced every moment. The Värmlands Moose Park gave us an up-close encounter with moose, one of Finland’s iconic animals. In Vuokatti Adventure, we enjoyed outdoor activities perfect for the whole family. Meanwhile, Ruka Adventures in the north treated us to thrilling experiences in the pristine wilderness, from husky sledding to exploring the Amethyst Mine in search of the precious purple stone.
In Rovaniemi, we couldn’t resist visiting Santa Claus Village—a must-see for families. The kids had a blast meeting Santa and exploring the festive shops. We also took a detour to the Lapland Husky Safaris, where we embraced the excitement of dog-sledding through snow-covered forests, an experience we will never forget.
The Heart of Sweden’s Wonders
After a refreshing stint in Finland’s northernmost corners, we crossed over into Sweden, where the magic of the countryside awaited. Our first stop was the medieval Turku Castle, one of the most iconic landmarks in Finland’s southwest. Nearby, we took the kids to Moomin World, where the whimsical world of the Moomins brought joy and nostalgia to everyone.
As we ventured deeper into Sweden, we made our way to Örebro Castle, a stunning historical site where we learned about Sweden’s rich past. The Västerås Flight Museum delighted aviation enthusiasts in the family, while Gröna Lund—the famous amusement park in Stockholm—brought thrilling rides and laughter for the whole family.
Charming Towns and Culture
We visited the lively Kuopio Market, where we sampled local delicacies and experienced the region’s warm, welcoming spirit. We also ventured to Brewery Museum, discovering the history of Finnish brewing culture.
A trip to Särkänniemi and the Silent People display offered us a sense of both wonder and awe. The Silent People is an outdoor art installation featuring life-sized figures standing silently in the fields—an eerie but intriguing experience.
In Lesjöfors Museum, we learned about local history and industry, and in Hoverbergs Cave, we marveled at the ancient, untouched beauty of the cave formations.
The Road Less Traveled
Driving through remote regions and scenic roads in our motorhome, we embraced the freedom of the open road. The Aqua Nova and Silverhill Stable provided fantastic opportunities to explore local nature and enjoy horse riding. We also took a scenic stop at Sukulanrakka before heading further south.
Planning and Tips for the Road
If you’re planning your own RV road trip through Finland and Sweden, it’s essential to prepare with a solid route planner. We mapped out our journey well in advance, and it was a breeze to navigate the vast landscapes thanks to our reliable GPS. Always book your campsites in advance, especially during the peak summer months when demand is high. Also, don’t forget to check local road conditions—sometimes, parts of Finland and Sweden can be a bit remote, so ensure your campervan is in tip-top shape.
Make sure to pack for all types of weather, as the north can be cold even in summer. And while navigating through the mountains, fjords, and forests, it’s a good idea to keep a variety of snacks, games, and entertainment for the kids.
Route Planning Made Easy
From the moment we left Rovaniemi, we were enveloped in the wonders of Scandinavia. With a motorhome, we were able to make stops along the way, adjusting our pace as we went. The beauty of RV travel is the flexibility it offers—you can stay longer in places that captivate you, and speed up when you’re ready to move on.
Whether you're navigating through Finland’s vast Lapland or soaking in the charm of Sweden's coastline, this trip offers a perfect blend of history, adventure, and family fun. Our motorhome journey through Finland and Sweden was more than just a road trip—it was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
